Any sand or gravel with layer thickness presented in table 4 of EN 1176-1 is suitable when the particle size distribution D60 / D10 < 3.0.

• The D60 is the particle size below which 60% of the material is. Respectively, D10 is the particle size below which 10% of the material is.
• For example, sand which has D60 grain size of 6.01 mm and a D10 grain size of 2.39 mm has a particle size distribution D60 / D10 of 2.51 (6.01 / 2.39 = 2.51). Since this is less than 3.0, the material can be used as safety sand.
