Any sand or gravel used at the layer thickness specified in Table 4 of EN 1176-1 is suitable if its grain size is between 0,25 and 8,00 mm and its D60 / D10 ratio is less than 3.0.

• D60 is the particle size below which 60% of the material falls. Similarly, D10 is the particle size below which 10% of the material falls.
• For example, sand with a D60 particle size of 6.01 mm and a D10 particle size of 2.39 mm has a D60 / D10 ratio of 2.51 (6.01 / 2.39 = 2.51). Since the ratio is less than 3.0, the material can be used as safety sand.
